Football Records

I contacted the UMass Lowell Athletic Department and they compiled the information below for me. If there's one thing I know for sure, I know Dennis is smiling right now.

Dennis' name is still very prominent in our record book. He was part of the second winningest four-year period in UML Football history with a four-year record of 29-7.

Punt Returns in a:
Game: 7 vs. UMass Boston on Nov. 5, 1988
Season: 25, 1988
Career: 61, 1987-90

Most Yards on Punt Returns in a Career: 420, 1987-90
Highest Average Yards on Punt Returns in a Career: 6.9 (61 returns for 420 yards), 1987-90

Dennis was also a defensive back who compiled 79 tackles (64 solo, 15 assisted), nine interceptions and 21 pass breaks in his four years.

Records:
1990 - 8-1 (Second place in the New England Football Conference North Division)
1989 - 9-1 (NEFC North Champions)
1988 - 8-1 (Second place in the NEFC North)
1987 - 4-4 (no place listed)

Dennis was a great football player. He had an instinct to always be where the action was. I have many stories about Dennis but one always comes back to me. We were playing Mass. Maritime away and we had the game wrapped up in the fourth quarter with plenty of scores on the board. We wanted to get out of there by running the clock. Mass. was set up to do an onside kick and Dennis was our deep man in case the ball was kicked deep. Sure enough the ball was kicked on a line drive to the goal line. Dennis was instructed to get what he could and hit the deck before he could be tackled. Dennis started up field cut left and was easily on his way for a hundred yard kick off return. The Lowell sideline went wild cheering for such an unlikely play. This was late in the game and most of the players were pretty beat, including Dennis. AS he ran we could see the entire team in hot pursuit of Dennis. with about 20 yards to go his legs began to tighten up, and the tacklers were gaining ground.. It seemed almost in slow motion at the end but he was nailed at the one yard line. Our entire sideline was laughing out of control including me ...I laughed the longest....Dennis came to the sideline out of breath and was mobbed by the entire team. In the four years that he was here ,he never came out of the line up...he often covered the other teams best receivers.... He was a pleasure to coach.... I still think about him often and have many great stories about him......Dennis Scannell Head Football Coach Umass Lowell.....We had great teams with great players and great kids.
